At the Ai4 conference, three well-known AI researchers argued for openness, warned about risks, and agreed some regulation is needed.

At the Ai4 conference in Las Vegas, Geoffrey Hinton, Fei-Fei Li, and Andrew Ng discussed growing worries about AI safety and whether AI systems should be open to more people.
A key topic was “open-weight” AI models. These are AI models where the trained settings, or “weights,” are shared publicly, like giving someone the finished engine parts, not just the blueprint. Critics say this can make it easier for bad actors to reuse powerful models.
Ng said he worries about a few big companies becoming “gatekeepers,” meaning they control who gets access and what gets built. He argued for multiple competing providers and more openness so more people and smaller companies can use AI.
Hinton drew a line between open-source software, where people can inspect the code to find bugs, and open weights, which can be quickly adapted for harmful uses like cyber attacks. Still, he said open-weight models are already widespread, and the industry cannot easily go back.
Li argued that the open versus closed debate is not all or nothing. She compared it to nuclear science, where research papers can be public, but materials like uranium are regulated, and other work sits in the middle.
This debate affects who can build and use AI tools, what safeguards exist, and how governments may regulate AI. It also shapes whether AI is mostly controlled by a small number of companies, or spread more widely, with both the benefits and the risks that come with that.
