Google says Gemini voice commands in the Home app are now more precise, better at understanding context, and less likely to cut you off mid-sentence.
In short: Google is updating Gemini for Home to make smart home voice commands feel more natural and work more reliably.
Google announced changes to its Gemini for Home experience on March 2, 2026. The company says the updates improve how Gemini handles voice controls inside the Google Home app.
One fix is better “device and location isolation.” In plain terms, Gemini should be less likely to affect the wrong thing. For example, a command like “Turn off the kitchen” should now target only the kitchen lights, not plugs or other devices that happen to be in that room. Google also says “Turn off all the lights” should apply only to the home you selected in the app, using the address on file.
Google also says Gemini is better at understanding context. That means you can speak more normally when controlling appliances or your thermostat, and Gemini should still understand what you mean even if you do not name every device exactly.
The Verge reports an additional example of more natural lighting requests. It says you can describe the kind of lighting you want, such as “the color of the ocean,” and Gemini will pick a color based on your words.
Google says conversations should also have fewer interruptions, with fewer cases where Gemini cuts you off early.
Smart home voice control can feel like talking to a very literal person who only understands exact phrases. These updates aim to make it closer to talking to a helpful assistant, so fewer lights or devices change by mistake and you spend less time repeating yourself.
