Google shared what is coming in Android 17, including updated emoji, a new tool to slow down distracting apps, and AI features like cleaner dictation and custom widgets.
In short: Google has announced the main new features coming to Android 17, with a mix of AI tools, sharing upgrades, and digital well-being changes.
Google used its Android Show event to preview Android 17, the next major update for Android phones. The company highlighted nine changes, some powered by AI and some focused on everyday usability.
One non-AI update is a full redesign of Android’s emoji, around 4,000 icons, with a more 3D look. Google also introduced Pause Point, a screen time feature that adds a 10-second wait before you open apps you label as “distracting.” It can suggest breathing exercises or a different app, and turning it off requires restarting your phone.
Android 17 will also add Screen Reactions, a tool for recording your selfie camera and what is on your screen at the same time. Google says it will arrive on Pixel phones first this summer.
On sharing, Google plans to expand Quick Share support that works with Apple’s AirDrop on more Android phones from brands like Xiaomi, Honor, and OnePlus. For phones without that compatibility, Quick Share can generate a QR code, and an iPhone user can scan it to receive the file to iCloud. Google also says Android 17 will finally support Apple’s newer wireless transfer method for switching from iPhone, starting with Pixel and Galaxy phones.
On the AI side, Google previewed Rambler, which cleans up dictated text by removing filler words and fixing errors, and Create My Widget, which lets you describe a homescreen widget in plain language (like ordering off a menu). Both are planned for select Pixel and Galaxy phones this summer.
Android updates can change how your phone feels day to day. These features aim to make sharing files less frustrating, make switching from iPhone smoother, reduce distractions, and add optional AI help for writing and custom phone widgets.
