Google has released a Gemini app built for Mac. It adds a keyboard shortcut, lets users share their screen and local files, and supports image and video creation.
In short: Google has released a Gemini app made for Mac computers, with a quick keyboard shortcut and tools that can work from what is on your screen.
Google announced a native Gemini app for macOS, meaning it is an app built to run directly on a Mac instead of inside a web browser.
With the new app, users can open Gemini from anywhere on their Mac using a shortcut, Option + Space. Google says this is meant to help people get answers without switching between browser tabs.
The app also lets you share what is on your screen with Gemini, including local files stored on your computer. For example, if you are looking at a complex chart, you can ask Gemini to summarize it and call out the main takeaways. Think of it like asking a helper to look at the same page you are looking at and explain what stands out.
Google says the app can also generate images using a tool it calls Nano Banana and generate videos using a tool called Veo.
The Gemini app for Mac is available globally starting today for all Gemini users running macOS 15 or later. It can be downloaded from gemini.google/mac.
Many people already use AI helpers in a browser, but a desktop app can be faster and easier to pull up while you are working. The screen sharing feature could be useful for everyday tasks like understanding a document, checking a spreadsheet formula, or summarizing a chart, as long as users are comfortable sharing what they are viewing.
