Google is testing a Gemini feature that can complete steps in food and ride apps in the background on Pixel 10 and Galaxy S26 phones.
In short: Google is testing a Gemini feature that can use certain apps for you to do tasks like ordering food or booking a ride.
Google has started rolling out a beta feature in Gemini called task automation, also described as screen automation. It lets Gemini complete multi-step actions inside a small set of supported apps, like food delivery and rideshare services.
The feature first appeared on Samsung’s Galaxy S26 phones at the Galaxy Unpacked 2026 event on February 25, with rollout starting around March 2026. Google then expanded it to the Pixel 10 phone lineup, including the Pixel 10 Pro, through the March 2026 Pixel Feature Drop.
For now, it is a limited preview in the US and South Korea. Supported apps include DoorDash, Grubhub, Instacart, Lyft, McDonald’s, Starbucks, Uber, and Uber Eats, plus Korea-only apps like Baemin and Kakao T.
You tell Gemini what you want, such as “order food” or “book a ride.” Gemini opens the app in a secure virtual window (think of it like a protected copy of the app running in a separate space) and works through the steps in the background while you keep using your phone.
You get live progress notifications, and you can view progress or stop the task. Gemini pauses at the final confirmation, like the payment screen, so it does not complete purchases or bookings without you reviewing and tapping to confirm.
This is a small but clear move toward AI assistants that do more than answer questions. Still, it is early. Reports say it can be slow and clunky, and one test on a Galaxy S26 Ultra reportedly locked the screen and required a reboot.
