Google says its Android CLI 1.0 is now stable and can work with AI coding tools like Claude Code and OpenAI Codex to speed up Android app development.
In short: Google launched Android CLI 1.0, a stable command line tool that helps developers and AI assistants build Android apps faster.
Google announced at its Google I/O developer conference that Android CLI (command-line interface) is now “stable” at version 1.0. A command-line interface is a text-based way to control software by typing instructions (like giving short written orders instead of clicking buttons).
Google said the tool is meant to work well with AI coding agents, including third-party options like Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex, plus Google’s own tools inside Android Studio. AI coding agents are tools that can write and edit code for you based on instructions, a bit like a very fast assistant that can draft and revise.
With Android CLI, an AI agent can use a new “android studio” command to pull Android development knowledge and capabilities from Android Studio, Google’s main app-building software. Google also said its agent platform, Antigravity, will offer an optional bundle that installs Android CLI so it can handle core Android app development tasks.
More people are using AI helpers to build apps, and many of those helpers do not come from Google. By making Android specific know-how easier to access from the command line, Google is trying to ensure that whoever you use to help write code, it can still follow Android’s rules and tools. For everyday users, this could mean more apps get built and updated faster, although quality still depends on the people and tools doing the work.
