Google’s AI summaries now appear above web links in search results, and publishers say it is reducing clicks to their sites.
In short: Google’s AI summaries at the top of Search are making it harder for online publishers to get traffic from Google.
For years, many news and information sites depended on Google Search to bring in readers. Publishers put time and money into changing headlines, page layouts, and other details so their articles would show up high in Google results. The basic deal was simple, publishers created pages for Google to list, and Google sent people to those pages.
That balance has shifted with Google’s AI search features, especially “AI Overviews.” AI Overviews are short, AI-written summaries that appear at the very top of some search results. They pull information from multiple websites and then show a few source links underneath.
Publishers worry this keeps people on Google instead of sending them to the original articles. It is like getting a book report at the top of the page, then a list of books you could read if you still feel like it. The Verge also notes that Google has changed how it ranks results, which can further affect which sites get seen.
Google’s AI Overviews had early issues, including incorrect answers, which raised concerns about accuracy. Even when the summaries are correct, publishers say there is no guarantee a reader will click through to the source.
Watch how Google adjusts AI Overviews, including how it chooses sources and how clearly it credits them. Also watch whether publishers change strategies again, such as focusing more on newsletters, apps, direct visits, or other platforms that do not rely on Google search traffic.
