Google’s AI Overviews sometimes show chatbot-style replies instead of search summaries when people type certain words like “disregard,” “ignore,” or “skip.”
In short: Google’s AI Overviews sometimes stop acting like search results and instead reply like a chatbot when people search certain words.
Google’s AI Overviews are meant to show a short, AI-written summary at the top of some Google searches. Think of it like a quick “here’s the gist” box that pulls together information from different web pages.
According to The Verge, searches for certain words are causing that box to behave oddly. When a Verge colleague searched for “disregard,” the AI Overview did not show a summary of web results. Instead, it responded like a chat assistant, saying, “Got it! Let me know if you need help with anything else.” Nothing else appeared in the AI Overview section.
The Verge reports similar behavior with other terms. Searching “ignore” showed a message that sounded like it was responding to a person’s instruction, not a search query. Searching “skip” produced another chatbot-like response, suggesting the message was “a test or a typo.” It is like typing a single word into a library catalog and having the librarian answer, “Okay, what would you like to do next?” instead of showing books.
Google did not immediately respond to The Verge’s request for comment. The main thing to watch is whether Google treats this as a short-lived bug, or changes how AI Overviews handle certain words that can sound like commands. For everyday users, it is a reminder that AI summaries in search can be inconsistent, so it may help to scroll to the regular links when something looks off.
