GitHub Copilot will start charging based on token use on June 1. Some developers say their monthly costs could rise sharply under the new model.
In short: GitHub Copilot is moving from a flat monthly fee to usage based billing on June 1, and some developers say it could make costs jump.
GitHub Copilot, a tool that helps people write software, is changing how it charges customers. Instead of paying one set subscription price, users will pay based on how much they use it.
The new system is based on “tokens,” which are small pieces of text that an AI reads and writes (think of tokens like counting words and punctuation to measure how much the tool worked). The more tokens you use while asking questions or generating code, the more you can be charged.
Some developers are reacting strongly online. In posts on Reddit and X, a few users claimed their estimated bills would jump from tens of dollars per month to hundreds or even thousands of dollars, based on how many tokens they use.
Other developers pushed back, saying those extreme examples likely come from using Copilot in a very heavy, trial and error way. Some argued that careful users should not burn through tokens that quickly.
TechCrunch reported that it reached out to Microsoft for comment but did not receive a response by the time the story was published.
For individuals and small teams, a flat fee is easy to plan for, like an unlimited monthly transit pass. Token billing can feel more like paying per ride, where the total is harder to predict until the month is over. If widely used AI tools shift to pay for what you use pricing, more people may need to watch usage closely or set limits to avoid surprise bills.
