The company reportedly expects many of its roughly 1,500 employees to consider the offer. It also told staff it plans to approve buyouts for most people who ask. Flock described the package as the most generous it has ever offered.
Wired reported that the company said it would “almost certainly” need layoffs if it did not reduce staff through buyouts. The report also said the buyouts could help Flock part ways with employees who feel discouraged after months of criticism.
Flock’s main product is license plate recognition, which uses cameras and software to read car plates (like an automated note taker that watches traffic). Privacy concerns around this kind of system have grown. The Washington Post previously reported dozens of cases where police officers were accused of misusing access, including allegedly tracking current or former partners.
TechCrunch reported earlier this month that Florida and Texas said they will stop using Flock’s technology. Another report said 90 cities dropped Flock in August alone. If more places stop using these systems, companies like Flock may see fewer contracts, and that can lead to workforce cuts.
