OpenAI executive Fidji Simo is leaving her full-time AGI leadership role and will become a part-time advisor after medical leave for a chronic illness.
In short: OpenAI executive Fidji Simo is leaving her full-time role leading the company’s AGI work and will become a part-time advisor because of an ongoing illness.
Fidji Simo said on X that she is stepping down as OpenAI’s AGI chief and moving into a “part-time advisor” role. AGI stands for artificial general intelligence, which is the idea of an AI system that can do many different kinds of tasks at a human level (like a flexible worker, not a single-purpose tool).
Simo had announced in April that she was taking a short medical leave due to a neuroimmune condition. She wrote that her illness severely worsened and that her recovery is taking longer and is more complicated than she expected. She said she needs to focus on her health.
Simo had only recently taken the AGI chief title, after serving as OpenAI’s CEO of applications. In the same period, OpenAI has seen other leadership changes, including COO Brad Lightcap stepping back to focus on “special projects,” and CMO Kate Rouch stepping down to focus on her health.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also posted on X that he was sad about the news and thanked Simo.
Leadership changes can affect what a company builds and how quickly it moves, especially at OpenAI, whose tools are used by millions of people. It also shows how demanding these roles can be, and how health issues can reshape plans even at the biggest AI companies.
