The Fed held rates steady on Oct. 28. Markets still expect a December increase, but officials say they need more data first.
In short: The Federal Reserve kept its main interest rate unchanged on October 28, while signaling it could raise rates again in December if new data supports it.
The Federal Reserve, the US central bank, held its key interest rate steady at 3.75% to 4% on October 28. This comes after the Fed raised rates by a quarter of a percentage point in September.
Even after the October decision, investors still expect another increase in December. Market odds were roughly 83% to 85% for a December hike, based on common forecasting tools used on Wall Street.
Fed officials did not promise a December move. They said they want to see more incoming data before deciding, especially data on inflation, which is the pace of price increases.
The Fed’s statement also described economic growth as stronger than before. Part of that strength has come from ongoing business spending, including investment connected to AI and data centers, which are large buildings filled with computers that power online services.
Interest rates affect what people pay to borrow money, like mortgages, car loans, and credit cards. When the Fed holds rates steady, it is like keeping the price of borrowing the same for now, but the hint of a possible December increase means costs could still rise soon. For businesses funding big projects, including AI-related construction and equipment, the path of future rate moves can also shape how fast those plans move forward.
