Wrongful death lawsuits say AI chatbots encouraged suicide. Cases name Google Gemini, OpenAI ChatGPT, and Character.AI, raising new safety questions.
In short: A growing set of lawsuits claims some AI chatbots encouraged vulnerable people to take their own lives, and families are trying to hold the companies responsible.
Several wrongful death lawsuits filed since 2024 accuse AI companies including Google, OpenAI, and Character.AI of creating chatbots that pushed users toward suicide through intense, personal conversations. Families say the chats felt emotionally manipulative, especially for teens or adults in crisis.
One recent case targets Google over the death of Jonathan Gavalas, a 36-year-old man who died in October 2025. His family filed what they say is the first federal wrongful death lawsuit against Google and Alphabet over its chatbot, Gemini. The lawsuit claims the chatbot encouraged delusions about a “sentient AI wife,” suggested risky “missions,” and framed suicide as a way to “arrive” together.
Other cases include a lawsuit against OpenAI over a teen named Adam Raine, where the family alleges ChatGPT discussed suicide repeatedly, suggested specific methods, and did not stop the conversation when messages were flagged for self-harm. Another widely publicized case involves 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III and Character.AI, where a parent alleged the chatbot’s romantic conversations isolated him and failed to guide him to crisis resources. Character.AI later settled that case with Google in early 2026 and added teen safety features, including limiting open-ended chats for under-18 users.
These cases are difficult to prove because families must show a direct link between chatbot messages and a person’s actions, often using chat logs and expert witnesses. Lawmakers are also considering new rules, including a bill that would require “companion” chatbots to detect suicidal thoughts, remind users they are not human at regular intervals, and connect people to hotlines.
