Reports say routine office roles like coding, customer service, and data entry are most exposed to AI, with job shifts possibly becoming visible in 2026.
In short: Analysts and executives say many entry-level office jobs that involve routine computer tasks could see visible changes from AI by 2026.
Several reports point to “gateway” white-collar roles as the most exposed to AI. These are common entry points into office work, like entry-level coding, customer service, data entry, bookkeeping, accounting, and technical writing.
The reason is simple. Many of these jobs involve repeatable work on a computer, like filling in forms, answering common questions, or turning standard information into reports. Modern AI systems can already do many of these tasks well, and newer tools can also generate video, like Sora and VEO (video generators, meaning software that can create short videos from text prompts).
Some analyses rank the most vulnerable roles as computer programmers (45% likelihood of displacement), customer service representatives (42%), and data entry and medical records clerks (40%). Marketing research analysts were also listed (39%). Public comments from leaders, including Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman, suggest they expect AI to handle many professional tasks, such as accounting, legal work, marketing, and project management, on a relatively short timeline.
There are early signs of impact. Challenger, Gray & Christmas reported about 55,000 job cuts tied to AI in 2025. A Harvard Business Review survey of 1,006 companies found some firms are cutting or slowing hiring based on AI’s potential, even when results are not fully proven.
Economists caution that new technology often creates new jobs, but workers may not move easily into them. Watch for clearer government reporting on AI-related job changes, and for how quickly companies shift hiring for entry-level office roles. Trades that require hands-on work, like HVAC, appear safer for now because AI cannot physically do those jobs yet.
