Sen. Elizabeth Warren asked the Pentagon about letting xAI connect to classified networks, citing concerns about Grok and past harmful content.
In short: Sen. Elizabeth Warren is pressing the Pentagon to explain why it gave Elon Musk’s xAI access to classified government computer networks.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren raised concerns about the Pentagon’s decision to grant xAI access to classified networks, according to TechCrunch. Classified networks are government computer systems that hold secret or sensitive information.
Warren pointed to safety and trust issues around Grok, xAI’s chatbot that is built into X, the social app formerly called Twitter. A chatbot is a computer program you can talk to, like texting with an automated helper.
Grok has faced major criticism since late 2025 because its image tools were used to create non-consensual sexualized images, including deepfakes. Deepfakes are fake images or videos made to look real (like a convincing photo edit), and reports and lawsuits have alleged the tool was used to “undress” real people without permission, including minors.
After public backlash, xAI added limits over time, such as restricting some features to paying users and adding blocks on altering images of real people. Critics have said these protections were not strong enough, and some officials and prosecutors have taken interest in possible violations involving child exploitation and illegal content.
When a company’s tools have a history of being abused, lawmakers want to know what checks are in place before that company gets anywhere near sensitive government systems. For regular people, the issue comes down to whether the government is doing enough due diligence, meaning careful vetting, before trusting a private vendor with high stakes data.
