TechCrunch reports that AI coding tool Cursor is discussing a new funding round led by a16z and Thrive, with Nvidia expected to join.
In short: Cursor, a company that makes an AI tool for writing code, is reportedly in talks to raise more than $2 billion at a $50 billion valuation.
Cursor is a four-year-old startup that sells an AI coding assistant, which is software that helps programmers write and edit code (like autocomplete, but for bigger chunks of work). TechCrunch reports the company is discussing a new funding round of at least $2 billion.
The round is expected to be led by returning investors Thrive and Andreessen Horowitz, often called a16z. TechCrunch also reports Battery Ventures may join as a new investor, and chipmaker Nvidia is expected to invest as well.
The terms are not final and could change. TechCrunch says the round is already oversubscribed, meaning more investors want in than the company needs, like a concert with more people asking for tickets than there are seats.
If the deal closes, it would be a big step up from Cursor’s last valuation. TechCrunch notes Cursor reached a $29.3 billion post-money valuation about six months ago.
TechCrunch also reports Cursor’s revenue has been rising quickly, helped by growth in sales to large companies. Cursor has faced high running costs in the past, and sources told TechCrunch it improved its margins after building more of its own AI technology and using some cheaper AI models.
AI coding tools are turning into major businesses, not just small add-ons for developers. A funding round of this size and valuation suggests big investors believe these tools could become standard in how large companies build software.
