Cursor adds Automations and cloud agents for proactive AI coding

In short: Cursor has launched new Automations and upgraded cloud agents that can start and finish coding tasks with less human prompting.

What happened

Cursor, a company that makes an AI coding tool, released a feature called Automations on March 5, 2026. Automations let teams set triggers that start an AI “agent” (an AI helper that can take steps on its own). Triggers can include a change in the codebase (the shared folder of a software project), a Slack message, or a timer.

Cursor says these Automations can handle jobs like code review, incident response, and weekly summaries sent to Slack. One example mentioned is a PagerDuty connection where the agent can check server logs (records of what a computer system has been doing) when an alert comes in, so a person does not have to start from scratch.

Cursor also upgraded its cloud agents. These agents run on remote computers called virtual machines (think of a rented computer in the cloud). Cursor says the agents can produce merge-ready pull requests, which are proposed code changes that can be reviewed and added to a project, along with evidence like screenshots, videos, and logs.

Cursor says it has more than 1 million daily users, about 25% market share among paid AI coding subscribers, and annual revenue above $2 billion as of early March 2026. The company is competing more directly with OpenAI and Anthropic as AI coding tools shift from “help me type” features to more autonomous workflows.

Why it matters

For many teams, software work includes lots of repeat checks and follow-ups. Trigger-based agents are like setting a smart assistant to watch for specific events and start working right away, which could reduce the time people spend monitoring and triaging.
