Firms are trying to limit small, frequent AI requests after costs rose quickly. Accenture is cited as one example, according to a 404 Media report.
In short: Companies are starting to limit how employees use AI at work because lots of small requests can quickly run up the bill.
Many companies pay for AI tools based on “tokens,” which are small chunks of text the AI reads and writes (like paying by the word). Earlier this year, some firms pushed employees to use AI more often. Some even used internal scoreboards to encourage heavy usage.
Now the mood is changing. A TechCrunch report says companies are realizing it is easy to spend a lot on AI without getting much back, especially when people use it for basic tasks.
One example comes from consulting firm Accenture. According to a 404 Media report cited by TechCrunch, Accenture has tried to stop employees from using up its token supply on simple work, like turning a PDF into a slide deck. 404 Media said its reporting was based on leaked audio from an internal meeting.
In that meeting, Accenture’s agentic AI strategy lead Justice Kwak said AI spending is becoming a meaningful part of company costs. He also said the spending is hard to predict, and leaders like the CFO, COO, and CIO are asking whether the company is getting enough value for what it pays.
TechCrunch also notes that concerns about AI costs are showing up in the market, with recent stock moves hitting some AI-dependent businesses and chip makers.
More companies may add limits, approvals, or budgets for AI use, similar to how businesses control travel expenses. The key question will be whether firms can focus AI use on high-value work instead of lots of small tasks.
