In short: More people are downloading and using Anthropic’s Claude app, and it has moved ahead of ChatGPT in Apple’s US free app rankings.
Anthropic says its Claude app has surged in popularity in recent weeks. The company reports record-high daily sign-ups, with free users up more than 60% since January. It also says paid subscribers have more than doubled so far this year.
Claude has also climbed above ChatGPT in Apple’s US App Store free app chart. App store rankings are a simple snapshot of how an app is doing compared with others, based largely on downloads and activity. Anthropic also says Claude is seeing more new installs than ChatGPT and that its daily active users are growing.
The shift follows a high-profile disagreement about military use of AI. Anthropic said it would not allow the US Department of Defense to use its AI models for mass domestic surveillance (watching large numbers of people at home) or for fully autonomous weapons (weapons that can choose targets on their own). After that, OpenAI announced its own agreement with the Pentagon, which helped spark public controversy.
Anthropic’s stance led to political pushback. According to the report, President Trump ordered federal agencies to stop using Anthropic’s products. Even so, the consumer app appears to be growing.
It is worth watching whether the app store lead lasts, and whether government restrictions affect Anthropic’s business outside the consumer market. It is also a sign that public trust and policy choices can quickly shift which AI assistant people pick, like shoppers changing stores after a news story.
