China says it is checking whether Meta’s reported $2.5B purchase of Manus AI follows rules on moving technology out of the country.
In short: China is reviewing Meta’s reported $2.5 billion acquisition of Manus AI to see if it breaks Chinese rules on moving technology overseas.
Meta has reportedly agreed to buy the technology and leadership team of Manus AI, a startup based in Singapore that has Chinese roots. Reports put the price at about $2.5 billion, although some sources cite $2 billion. Manus is expected to keep its Singapore base and end any remaining Chinese ownership and operations.
Manus makes “AI agents,” which are AI helpers that can carry out multi step tasks (like a digital assistant that can complete a whole errand, not just answer a question). The company says its agents can do things like screen resumes, analyze stocks, and plan travel. Reports say Manus reached a $125 million revenue run rate by December 2025, around eight months after launch.
China’s Ministry of Commerce said in early January 2026 that it will assess whether the deal follows China’s export control rules. Export controls are laws that limit what sensitive technology can be transferred out of a country, like needing permission before shipping certain equipment abroad. Officials are looking at whether Manus’s earlier move of its core team and technology from China to Singapore required an export license.
This review could delay or even block the acquisition, which matters because it affects what AI features Meta can bring into its products. It also highlights growing pressure on Chinese founded companies that move to places like Singapore to raise money or sell themselves abroad, sometimes called “Singapore-washing.” While some commentary has suggested a crackdown on people linked to Manus, reports say there is no confirmed evidence of arrests, and the focus is on regulatory review.
