OpenAI, xAI, and Anthropic reported service problems affecting ChatGPT, Grok, and Claude, with errors, login issues, and limited access to some models.
In short: Three popular AI chatbots, ChatGPT, Grok, and Claude, all had service problems around the same time on September 3, 2026.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT started showing error messages for many users at around 11AM ET. On OpenAI’s status page, the company said it was seeing “elevated errors” across ChatGPT and Codex (a related coding tool).
The issues went beyond just chat messages. The outage also affected logins, file uploads, voice mode (talking to the bot), search, “deep research” (a feature that helps gather and summarize information), and image generation.
Anthropic’s Claude also ran into problems around the same time. Anthropic’s status page said an outage started around 10:30AM ET and initially impacted several model options, including Mythos/Fable and Opus. Later, Anthropic said the issue was only affecting Opus 4.8 and Opus 5.
xAI’s Grok reported a similar outage in its app and on the web. xAI said it was working to restore service as quickly as possible.
None of the companies shared a clear cause right away, or whether the outages were connected. OpenAI said it had “applied a mitigation” (a quick fix meant to reduce the problem) and was monitoring recovery. Anthropic said it was continuing to work on a fix.
Many people now use these chatbots like a daily helper, similar to relying on a calculator or a navigation app. When multiple services go down at once, it can interrupt schoolwork, customer support, writing, coding help, and other routine tasks.
