Benchmark named Everett Randle a new General Partner. He says AI startups should focus less on margins and more on gross dollars per customer.
In short: Venture firm Benchmark named Everett Randle as a new General Partner, and he has been talking publicly about how he evaluates AI businesses.
Benchmark has added Everett Randle, also known as Ev Randle, as its newest General Partner. A General Partner is a senior investor who helps decide which startups a firm funds.
Randle has worked at other well known investment firms, including Kleiner Perkins, Founders Fund, and Bond Capital. Benchmark has backed major tech companies in the past, and it has also invested in several high valuation AI related startups in recent years.
In a 20VC podcast interview published in November 2025, Randle described how he thinks AI changes the way investors should measure a company. He said people should not focus too much on profit margins, and should pay more attention to “gross dollars per customer,” meaning the total dollars a company brings in from each customer before expenses.
He also discussed how large AI model makers can put pressure on smaller AI app companies. An AI model is like the “engine” that powers an AI product, and if the engine makers also build their own apps, it can be harder for app only companies to stand out. He mentioned Anthropic’s Claude as strong in business use and coding, and he said OpenAI could eventually reach a $1 trillion valuation.
For regular people, these investor views can shape which kinds of AI products get funded and built. One note of caution is that while some coverage links Randle to the idea that “enterprise automation” is the biggest AI opportunity, the available public sources do not clearly show him saying that directly.
