Amazon Web Services is creating a forward-deployed engineer group that works inside customer companies to set up AI “agents” and teach teams to maintain them.
In short: Amazon Web Services says it will commit $1 billion in internal resources to a new team that works inside customer companies to set up AI tools and train staff to run them.
Amazon Web Services, or AWS, has launched a new internal organization focused on “forward-deployed engineers.” These are AWS engineers who temporarily work closely with a customer, sometimes on site, to help install and customize AI systems.
AWS says the team will help companies deploy “purpose-built agents.” An agent is an AI program that can take actions for you, like a very capable assistant that can follow steps and use software tools (for example, pulling data, writing a report, or routing a request).
According to AWS, the goal is fast setups and “customer self-sufficiency.” In other words, AWS wants customers to end the project not only with working AI software, but also with the know-how to manage and improve it without needing constant outside help.
AWS Vice President of Frontier AI Francessca Vasquez said customers will leave these deployments with “new solutions and new engineering capabilities.” Amazon also said the $1 billion figure is a commitment of internal resources, not a separate investment fund or a joint venture.
Many businesses like the idea of using AI, but struggle to get it working in their day-to-day operations. This AWS approach is like sending a specialist to your office to set up a new system, adjust it to your workflows, and teach your team how to use it and maintain it. Similar groups have also been created recently by OpenAI and Anthropic, which suggests that hands-on help is becoming a standard part of selling AI to large organizations.
