Ask Maps is still in testing in Google Maps, not rolling out today

Google’s Ask Maps chat feature in Google Maps is still experimental, with limited opt-ins and no official launch date as of February 2026.

In short: Google’s “Ask Maps” chat tool for Google Maps on mobile is still in development and limited testing, and it is not officially rolling out today.

What happened

Reports have suggested that “Ask Maps” is rolling out today in the Google Maps mobile app. Based on what is currently known, the main “Ask Maps” feature for general map use is still experimental as of February 2026.

This version of Ask Maps is tied to Google’s Gemini AI (a chatbot style assistant). In recent Android app versions, it appears as a small tappable chip with a sparkle icon under the search bar. When you tap it, it opens a chat screen where you can ask questions in normal language, like “quiet cafes with Wi-Fi” or “routes with fewer tolls,” and get suggestions about places, traffic, routes, and trip ideas.

Access is limited. Some users may see a new “Try new features” option in Google Maps settings, but early availability appears restricted to a small number of people, and it may depend on region and capacity.

A key detail is that much of this information comes from APK teardowns and code analysis. That means people examined the app’s files to spot unfinished features (like noticing a new room being built behind a closed door). Google can still change the feature, delay it, or never release it.

Also, Google has used the “Ask Maps” name for other things, like question and answer sections on business listings. That is separate from the experimental chat tool for everyday map browsing.

Why it matters

If you are looking for this feature today and cannot find it, you are not alone. For now, it is best understood as a test, not a finished feature with a public launch date.
