The podcast also points to a bigger backdrop. OpenAI has been hiring people with deep Apple hardware experience, and in 2025 it acquired Jony Ive’s AI hardware startup, io Products, for $6.5 billion. OpenAI has also been reported elsewhere as working on consumer hardware, including a screenless smart speaker type device, which would be a bit like a voice-first home assistant.
