Anthropic says it will challenge the Pentagon’s supply chain risk label in federal court after a March 4 letter. Reports conflict on whether it has filed yet.
In short: Anthropic says it will fight the U.S. Department of Defense in court over a “supply chain risk” designation, but as of March 9 it had not publicly filed the lawsuit.
On Feb. 27, President Trump posted on Truth Social calling for the U.S. government to stop using Anthropic’s technology. Later that day, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the Department of Defense was labeling Anthropic a “Supply-Chain Risk to National Security.”
The Pentagon’s move blocks Defense Department contractors and suppliers from doing commercial business with Anthropic. It includes a six month transition period. On March 4, the DOD sent Anthropic a formal letter confirming the designation.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said on March 5 that the company “see[s] no choice but to challenge it in court.” Anthropic argues the designation is legally questionable and unusual for a U.S. company. Some reports say Anthropic filed a lawsuit on March 9, while other reporting says no filing has happened yet.
The dispute ties back to a $200 million DOD contract signed in 2025 for classified AI tools. Negotiations later broke down. Anthropic says it refused to allow unrestricted use, including for mass surveillance of Americans or fully autonomous weapons.
This case could affect how much control AI companies can keep over how the government uses their tools. Think of it like a car maker arguing it can sell vehicles to the government, but still refuse certain modifications. It could also shape how easily the Pentagon can label a U.S. supplier a national security risk and extend the impact to other agencies.
