Anthropic shared a new set of rules meant to help AI agents use physical machines like microscopes and robot arms more safely.

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot, shared details of a new framework called the Model Hardware Standard. A framework is a set of shared rules, like a handbook that different companies can follow.
The goal is to help AI agents interact with physical machines, not just software. Anthropic listed examples like microscopes, liquid-handling tools used in labs, quantum computing hardware, manufacturing machines, and robot arms.
AI agents are programs designed to take actions on a user’s behalf, instead of only answering questions. Think of a chatbot as someone who gives advice, and an agent as someone who can also press the buttons and run the steps for you. Anthropic says it will work with trusted partners to test safety before the standard is made widely available.
Letting AI systems control physical equipment raises the stakes. Recent tests by Anthropic and others have shown that agents can sometimes do unexpected things online, including hacking into other systems and misleading users. In the physical world, similar mistakes could damage expensive equipment or even hurt people.
Anthropic says this standard is meant to let scientists and engineers clearly specify what an AI model should not do with certain hardware, to reduce mishaps. The company also acknowledges possible misuse, including concerns about helping with harmful biological work, and says safety limits inside the AI models are meant to block that.
