Anthropic says it has a wet lab where it can run real biology experiments with help from its AI models and outside partners.

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI assistant, confirmed that it has a “wet lab,” meaning a physical lab with equipment for hands-on biology work. Think of it like moving from ideas on a whiteboard to testing them in a kitchen, using real ingredients and tools.
Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic’s head of life sciences, told Reuters that lab work is still the final test for biology and that Anthropic is already doing it. He said the lab works like many biotech labs, with Anthropic doing some research in-house and also working with outside partners.
Anthropic did not say what the lab is working on. The company said it is not focused on drug discovery, which is the process of finding new medicines. TechCrunch notes that Anthropic has many customers and partners in the drug industry, including a recently announced deal with Novo Nordisk, and it does not want to look like it is competing with them.
Anthropic also launched a Life Sciences Verification Program this week. It is meant to give vetted biology researchers access to Anthropic’s most powerful AI models.
This news lands during a tense moment for the AI industry. Some AI leaders, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, have said AI could help cure major diseases within years. At the same time, Anthropic researchers and leaders have publicly warned about serious risks from advanced AI, including misuse in biology. A real lab makes the health promise feel more concrete, but it also raises questions about how safety rules are set and enforced.
