Anthropic product leader Cat Wu says future AI tools will take more initiative, setting up automations and anticipating what users need at work.
In short: Anthropic product leader Cat Wu says future AI tools will do more work on their own, by anticipating what people need and setting up tasks without being asked.
Cat Wu, Anthropic’s head of product for Claude Code and Cowork, shared her view of where AI is headed during an interview at Anthropic’s Code with Claude conference in San Francisco.
Wu said the “next big thing” is proactivity. That means AI would not just answer questions when you type them, but it would notice patterns in your work and suggest or set up helpful actions. Think of it like a very organized assistant who learns how your week usually goes, then prepares things before you remember to ask.
She described a recent shift from “synchronous” use, where people prompt a chatbot and wait for an immediate response, to routines that run on their own. One example is automating replies to customer support tickets. Wu said the next step is for Claude to understand what you work on and then set up some of these automations for you.
Wu also talked about “agents,” which are AI helpers that can carry out multi-step tasks. She compared managing agents to managing people. You still need to understand the job so you can spot mistakes and figure out what went wrong.
If AI tools become more proactive, the big questions will be when they are allowed to act, what data they can use to “understand” your work, and how much control users have. Safety and misuse also matter, especially for powerful tools that could be used for harmful purposes.
