Amazon MGM will not release Artificial, a film about the week Sam Altman was fired and rehired at OpenAI. The studio says it is seeking a new home.
In short: Amazon MGM has decided not to release Artificial, a film about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and the studio is looking for another company to put it out.
Amazon MGM has dropped Artificial, a movie directed by Luca Guadagnino that focuses on a dramatic week at OpenAI in 2023. That was the five day stretch when Sam Altman was fired as CEO and then brought back.
The movie has been in development for about a year, according to earlier reporting. It is set to star Andrew Garfield as Altman. The cast also includes Monica Barbaro as OpenAI’s chief technology officer Mira Murati, Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk, and Yura Borisov as OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever.
In a statement reported by Deadline, Amazon MGM said the movie “will be better served if it were released by a different studio” and that it is working with the filmmakers to find it a “new home.” Puck first reported that Amazon MGM would not release the film.
Amazon and OpenAI also have a business relationship. The Verge notes that Amazon announced a $50 billion investment in OpenAI in February.
For regular viewers, this means the film is now in limbo, like a book that has lost its publisher. It could still come out, but only if another studio or streaming service picks it up. The decision also shows how sensitive real world tech stories can be when the companies involved have close business ties.
