Brian Chesky plans to back a new AI lab while staying on as Airbnb CEO. The lab’s focus is not yet clear, but may center on design.
In short: Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky plans to back a new artificial intelligence lab, and he will remain CEO of Airbnb.
Bloomberg first reported that Brian Chesky, the CEO of Airbnb, plans to start a new AI lab. TechCrunch said it confirmed the plan with a person familiar with the situation. Airbnb and Chesky declined to comment.
An AI lab is a team that builds and tests AI systems (software that can write, talk, or help make decisions, like a very advanced autocomplete). Chesky has already used AI tools for writing code at Airbnb. But he said last year that Airbnb had not signed a partnership around large language models, or LLMs, because the products available were not quite ready. LLMs are the type of AI that can produce text, like a chatbot.
Chesky has close ties to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The article says the two met in 2006 through Y Combinator, a startup program that helped Airbnb early on. Chesky also advised Altman as OpenAI grew quickly, and he reportedly helped support Altman’s return after OpenAI’s board briefly removed him.
It is not clear what Chesky’s new lab will focus on. Bloomberg mentioned “user interaction and design,” which is about how people use an app and how it feels, like making the dashboard easy to understand. A person familiar with the situation said Chesky will not run the lab day to day.
Many companies are trying to make AI easier to use, not just more powerful. If Chesky’s lab focuses on design and interaction, it could shape how everyday people talk to AI tools and how much they trust them.
