New AI systems can make video from text, power humanoid robots, help discover materials, and more, turning old sci-fi ideas into practical products.
In short: More AI systems now do things that used to feel like science fiction, from making film-like video to helping robots move and helping scientists search for new materials.
AI video tools have improved fast. Some systems can turn text into multi-scene video with the same character staying consistent from shot to shot, like a director keeping the cast and costumes the same across a whole movie. A few products also generate audio along with the video, instead of adding sound later.
Robots that look and move more like people are also becoming more practical. Recent humanoid robots use AI to help them balance, walk, and handle objects, rather than relying only on fixed, pre-written moves. Researchers describe this as robots learning how to move from lots of practice data, similar to how a person gets better at a sport through repetition.
AI is also changing digital characters and personal devices. Games can now feature characters that speak new lines in a familiar voice using recordings plus AI, including a 2025 example in Fortnite with Darth Vader voiced from James Earl Jones recordings. Some wearable devices aim to record conversations all day and then provide summaries and advice, like an always-on diary that writes itself.
In science, AI systems are helping researchers search huge spaces for new materials and better forecasts. Brain and computer links are also improving, with experiments using AI to translate brain signals into intended movement or rough reconstructions.
As these tools spread, expect more debates about consent, privacy, and safety. That includes who controls always-recording wearables, and how “synthetic performances” should be labeled and licensed.
