New data shows AI workers are earning more than other tech roles, as hiring demand keeps growing and some analysts predict pay pressure later.
In short: Pay for AI jobs is rising faster than many other tech roles, as companies compete for a limited pool of skilled workers.
Median total pay for AI professionals in the US is around $160,000 a year, according to figures cited in recent reporting. That is about 12 to 28 percent higher than comparable non AI tech jobs. Some specialties can earn even more, including AI safety work, which can reach pay premiums as high as 45 percent.
Pay varies widely by experience and role. Entry level AI jobs are often listed around $70,000 to $120,000 in base pay, and some roles start higher, such as computer vision engineers (AI that helps computers understand images) at about $140,043. Senior AI engineers with six or more years of experience commonly land in the $200,000 to $225,000 range, with machine learning engineers at a cited median of $212,928.
Demand is also rising. AI job postings are up 257 percent since 2015, and new AI and machine learning hires are up 88 percent year over year in some datasets. More than half of AI roles are now outside traditional tech companies, meaning banks, retailers, and other firms are also competing for the same people.
The source material also claims top talent is leaving public sector jobs because of these pay jumps. However, the available information does not clearly confirm a large, documented wave from government or non profits into industry.
Some analysts expect weaker pay for junior tech roles starting in 2026, as companies use more AI tools and hire fewer beginners. If that happens, high end AI pay may stay strong, but the biggest premiums could narrow over time.
