Several AI companies, including Hugging Face, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral, and Nvidia, signed an open letter urging the U.S. government to avoid what they call “premature restrictions” on open-weight AI models.
“Open-weight” means the company shares key model files that let others run the AI on their own computers or servers (like giving out the engine parts, not just letting people ride in the car). This can make it easier for more people to build tools on top of the model.
The letter comes as Washington debates how to respond to allegations that Chinese AI labs are improperly taking ideas or outputs from U.S. AI systems. The Trump administration has reportedly considered banning Chinese open-weight models and possibly using sanctions against some Chinese AI companies, according to TechCrunch.
A key issue is “distillation,” which is a common method for improving an AI model by training it on another model’s answers (like a student learning by studying an expert’s worked examples). The signers argue policymakers should not treat distillation itself as wrongdoing, and should target illegal copying with focused legal and business actions instead.
The letter also argues that open-weight models can help defenders in cybersecurity, since defenders need strong tools too.
If the U.S. restricts open-weight models broadly, it could change what AI tools are available to startups, researchers, and smaller companies. It could also affect which companies control the most powerful AI systems, and whether more people can inspect them, test them, and build on them.
