Developers building AI data centers in remote areas are bringing back “man camps” to house construction and operations staff on site.
In short: Companies building large AI data centers in remote areas are using oilfield-style temporary camps to house workers on site.
AI data center developers are adapting “man camps”, temporary housing complexes first popular in remote oil fields, to deal with worker shortages and a lack of nearby housing. These camps are modular, meaning they can be delivered in pieces and set up quickly, like a large set of building blocks.
The camps let construction crews and day-to-day operations staff live close to the site. This matters in places that have land and energy options, but few apartments, hotels, or services. One example mentioned is the GW Ranch data center project in West Texas, which covers about 8,000 acres and produces its own power using natural gas and solar.
This housing approach fits a broader shift in where AI data centers are being built. New projects are showing up in rural or underused locations, including proposed sites on military bases such as Fort Hood and Fort Bliss in Texas, Fort Bragg in North Carolina, and Dugway Proving Ground in Utah. Other sites include places like Kuna, Idaho, and Amarillo, Texas, and several states including New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Wyoming, and West Virginia.
Some projects are “off-grid,” which means they generate their own electricity instead of relying on the local power network. TechCrunch reports that at least 47 off-grid projects have been identified nationwide.
Local opposition is growing in some areas. Residents have raised concerns about farmland loss, pollution from fuel use, and added strain on roads and other services. Watch for how companies respond, and whether local and state governments tighten or loosen rules for these large facilities.
