Surveys show some firms are replacing workers with AI, but large-scale staff cuts are still limited and new jobs are expected by 2030.
In short: Companies are using AI to automate more office work, but most have not replaced large numbers of employees yet.
Some companies are finding they can run with very small teams because AI tools can handle routine work, like drafting text, answering basic customer questions, and organizing information. It can feel like having an extra assistant that never sleeps, but it can also leave fewer coworkers around.
Surveys suggest this shift is real, but not uniform. One set of surveys found nearly 30% of US companies have already replaced some workers with AI tools such as ChatGPT, and forecasts say about 37% to 38% may do so by the end of 2026. A UK survey paints a slower picture, with 17% of employers expecting their workforce to shrink from AI this year.
The types of jobs most often mentioned are roles with repeatable tasks, like clerical work, data entry, customer service, some writing and photography, and parts of software development. Wall Street banks have also discussed cutting about 200,000 roles over three to five years, which is roughly 3% of their workforces. In one AI-exposed field, computer systems design, US employment has fallen about 5% since late 2022, while overall jobs grew about 2.5%.
Big predictions cut both ways. The World Economic Forum projects AI could displace 92 million jobs globally by 2030, but also create 170 million new ones, for a net gain of 78 million. Many companies are choosing training over mass layoffs, so watch whether employers invest in teaching workers how to use and check AI (like learning to supervise a very fast intern) or simply keep shrinking teams.
