2026 candidates court AI and crypto donors with subtle signals

Outside groups linked to crypto and AI are spending heavily in 2026 races, and candidates are adjusting messages and priorities to attract that money.

About 2 hours ago•AI Policy & Regulation

In short: More 2026 congressional candidates are shaping their campaigns to appeal to big AI and crypto political donors, often without saying so directly.

What's going on

Crypto-focused political groups are pouring money into House races early in the 2026 cycle. The biggest is Fairshake, a crypto super PAC (a group that can raise and spend large sums to influence elections) that started the cycle with about $193 million on hand. News coverage says Fairshake has already helped several pro-crypto Republicans win primaries, including Rep. French Hill of Arkansas, who won with 77% after more than $400,000 in Fairshake support.

Fairshake is also spending against crypto skeptics. In Texas, it put about $1.5 million into ads backing Christian Menefee, a pro-blockchain candidate, in an effort that pushed longtime Democrat Al Green into a runoff in a newly redrawn district.

Candidates often use vague language that is easy for industry donors to recognize but may not stand out to regular voters. Phrases like “supporting digital assets” and “embracing blockchain” show up in campaign materials. Groups such as Stand With Crypto also give candidates letter grades, which can function like a “consumer rating” for donors deciding who to support.

A similar pattern is emerging around AI. Anthropic has pledged $20 million for 2026 political activity, and a new group called Leading the Future, backed by OpenAI president Greg Brockman and Andreessen Horowitz, is planning more than $100 million in federal-race spending.

What to watch

The money is arriving as Congress debates rules for crypto trading and for AI safety and responsibility. Critics say these industries are trying to influence who writes the rules, like picking the referees before the game starts.
